Fat to Fit: Our Paleo/Crossfit Journey

Many of you reading this know us already, and some of you already know our story, but for those of you that don’t our names are Josh and Heather Martin. On February 1st, 2010, we made a decision to do what so many Americans do – make a New Year’s resolution to lose weight. At the time, I knew both of us had some weight to lose, but like many people I didn’t realize just how bad it had gotten. I was at a ground-shaking 264lbs and Heather was at 205lbs.

Before Paleo/CrossFit

The results of Paleo/CrossFit

Both of us had been heavy our whole life, but since we had gotten married in the summer of 2009, we had become, ah shall we say, comfortable with each other.

We started off with some small changes here and there. We started eating a little better. We started walking on some of the awesome trails and parks Indiana has to offer. We bought a treadmill, etc. This whole time, a buddy of mine at work kept urging me to try Crossfit. I went to exactly 1 class at his box, watched him do 50 ish squats during a WOD, and I turned around and left.

It was around summer time when we both started hitting that “wall”. In late July 2010 I finally took the plunge that would change our lives. I got home from work one day and, searched for a Crossfit gym near me. Crossfit IndyNorth was less then 5 miles from my house. I took it as a sign. There was an On-Ramp class starting at 6:30 and I decided to just go for it. Most everyone can relate to how those 8 classes go. You get your ass kicked, and you love every minute of it. Heather jumped in about a month after I started. That’s all step 1. The 90 Day Paleo Challenge is all about the next part of our story.

(On a side note, I encourage everyone to adopt this attitude – if you’re even THINKING about starting Paleo and/or Crossfit, go for it. Don’t make excuses that “Oh, but I can’t start today, I just bought a bunch of bad food, I’ll start next week!” or “Well, I can’t start Crossfit this week, maybe next week when I have more time.” You need to go right now. Seriously. Go pop open a can of tuna and grab an apple before you finish reading.)

First of all, if you haven’t, do yourself a favor and read Robb Wolf’s The Paleo Solution. It will give you all the ins and outs of the Paleo Diet and will also explain the science behind it. If you go Paleo, really committ yourself to the next 90 days, the results will be ridiculous. I’ve been “mostly” Paleo since starting Crossfit 5 months ago. Heather has been “mostly” Paleo for about the same time (she didn’t cut dairy until about 4 months ago). That’s to say we still have 1 – 2 cheat days a week and I usually indulge in too much alcohol once every couple of weeks. Eating clean is great. You’ll have TONS more energy and your recovery time will dramatically improve. In Heather’s first 4 weeks of Paleo she dropped 9% body fat. She went from not being able to run a full mile, to doing a 5 mile run at a 9min/mile pace in about 6 weeks time. The changes really will be that dramatic. Your body will thank you for not eating all the processed, “low fat” garbage food companies shove down our throats every day.

Regardless if you’re already in great shape or just starting out, Paleo will change your fitness level. You get all the carbs, fat, and protein you need from good, whole foods you can buy anywhere. Also, keep in mind this is just the first 90 days of your Paleo lifestyle change. Take this challenge seriously and get in the best shape of your life (ugh, that sounded like an infomercial, sorry). But afterwards, don’t go back to your old eating habits. You can’t justify something as being healthy because it says “reduced fat” or “low carb”. Processed junk is processed junk. If you feel like pizza on a Saturday night (after the challenge!) cool, eat until you’re miserable. I know I will. But the next day, go back to what you know is the healthier choice. Paleo is not a diet – its a way of life.
